Was Mario Created on March 10th?

According to our sources, the Mario World was created by the gaming genius Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and came to life around 1981. But the Mario world didn’t begin with Mario himself. It actually began with the video game Donkey Kong! And from there, Mario took on a virtual life of his own and became the icon he is today.

So, why is Super Mario Day on March 10th? The answer may make you giggle like Princess Peach. It’s simply because the date is written out: Mar10, and this looks like Mario!

Top 5 Super Mario Day Facts

Of course, there are TONS of cool facts we could sprinkle on Super Mario Day, but we know you’ve got some games to play, so we’re giving you the top 5 Super Mario Day facts about Super Mario. We wanna give a big shout-out to PBS for bringing out these facts; be sure to support your local PBS station!

  1. Bowser Inspired by Soup: Sounds strange, huh? It’s actually pretty neat! The creator behind the Super Mario world, Shigeru Miyamoto, came up with the term Koopa/Kuppa from a Korean dish (in its Japanese name) Gukbap. Which is a stew served with rice! Hey, there’s another way you can celebrate Super Mario Day, have some Gukbap!
  2. Most Influential Game: Spoken by the Guinness Book of World Records itself, Super Mario Kart is the most influential video game in the gaming world because of the incredible (and easy for video game designers) basis of the game itself. Now, there are hundreds of racing games with themes and characters of their own. Thanks, Super Mario Kart!
  3. The Video Game Crash: Around 1982/83, video games were not doing so hot in the US due to the influx of poorly made games flooding in from movies/tv shows. Around 1985/1986, Super Mario Bros. was making its way over from Japan to the US, and thankfully, it became what it is today.
  4. Mario & Mickey: Mario followed along in Mickey’s footsteps by being the iconic face of the Nintendo company, much like Mickey and Disney! This led to the radical success of Mario being almost more recognizable than Mickey himself. So, Mickey walked so Mario could run, would ya look at that?
  5. Mario the Spin-Off: As we mentioned before, Mario wasn’t the first to come about in the Super Mario world. He was merely a character by the name of Jumpman who appeared in Donkey Kong’s arcade game in 1981. Can you imagine a world with no Mario? No Super Mario Day?! A tragedy!

We encourage you to go on and set off to discover some more Super Mario quotes as a cool and educational way to celebrate Super Mario Day! You can even go on YouTube and simply type in Super Mario facts.
